The KGB, translated in English as Committee for State Security, was the main security agency of the Soviet Union. Being a successor to the Cheka and the NKVD, the KGB acted as both an intelligence agency and secret police agency.
The KGB used political officers to ensure the Soviet military's loyalty to the Marxist-Leninist ideology and the Soviet leadership, as well as collect information for the agency. Valerie Lebedjev, a Major in the KGB Third Chief Directorate, was assigned to Vladimir Orlovsky's units to record interviews and testimonials for the Morale Department during World War III.
